The Old Spice commercials were a viral sensation, and the Old Spice guy is a celebrity. So why did sales of Old Spice body wash actually drop?
According to industry-watching site WARC, the ubiquitous campaign for Old Spice body wash, “The Man Your Man Could Smell Like” actually corresponded with below-average sales:
“While there is little doubt about the viral hit’s popularity – the official version has racked up 12.2 million impressions on YouTube – sales of Red Zone After Hours Body Wash have fallen by 7%.”
The campaign appeared to be aimed at both women and men (the Old Spice Guy addresses “Ladies,” but the tagline at the end is, “Smell like a man, man.”) The ads were funny, and transcended the viral marketing stigma to become a legitimate hit on blogs and social networks. Audrey Hepburn has been named the most beautiful woman of the past century, beating stars such as Cheryl Cole and Angelina Jolie.
The actress, famed for her classic glam pose in a black Givenchy dress, pearls and gloves in 1961 film Breakfast At Tiffany‘s, topped a poll for shopping channel QVC.
The actress – who died in 1993 – narrowly held off the nation’s 21st century crush, Cheryl Cole, who took the runner-up spot.
Third place went to Some Like It Hot siren Marilyn Monroe, famed for her pout and classic curves.
Angelina Jolie was fourth and another classic silver screen beauty, Grace Kelly, made an appearance in fifth position.
Scarlett Johansson, Halle Berry, Diana, Princess of Wales, Kelly Brook and Jennifer Aniston also made the top 10.
The survey was carried out by QVC to celebrate the start of its Beauty Month throughout July. More than 2,000 women were asked to choose the top beauties of the past 100 years.
Vuvuzelas for BP

“BP is not feeling the pain they are causing in the Gulf. BP is spending millions on PR. In order to put a bit of public pressure on them, we plan to buy 100 vuvuzelas and hire 100 vuvuzela players off Craigslist to play in front of BP’s International Headquarters in London for an entire work day. Ideally, the players will keep coming back every day until they fix the gusher.
Budget: $2,000 = $1,000 for the vuvuzela protest ; $1,000 for the Gulf Disaster Fund
Budget is set at $2000 for now, which will be enough to buy 100 vuvuzelas at $6.50 a pop (plus shipping), and leave some left for hiring some people to manage the crowds. Hopefully (and likely) we can find people to play for free (plus they get a free vuvuzela). In which case, we’ll use the remaining funds to buy more vuvuzelas and find even more players.” More

According to Tampa Bay’s 10Connects.com: “With rain in the forecast and an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, 10 Connects has been getting e-mails and calls from viewers wondering if we could soon see black rain. National Weather Service Science and Operations Officer Charlie Paxton says while it’s always possible a water spout could pick up some oil and carry it a short distance, the notion of black rain is just not possible. Paxton says that’s because oil does not evaporate. As a result, talk of black rain is just a myth.”
